Urban planning is an instrument to adapt and develop urban areas and services. It should reflect the ever – changing demands placed by the people on the areas in which they live, work, play and travel. In view of the speed with which changes in settlement patterns occur, planning approaches and procedures should be flexible and suitable to facilitate these changes. Approaches in urban planning aims to assist in the development of adaptable urban systems, which are capable of handling growth, whilst simultaneously maintaining public amenity and urban quality. Master planning should deal with the essential dynamism of city development and design problems, by making allowances for change, intensification, or unexpected land uses.
A landscape developed with sustainable practices will improve the environment by conserving resources and reducing chemical applications. A sustainable landscape will also reduce labor inputs making it less expensive to implement and maintain. The study considered landscape concepts such as form, pattern, unity, scale and techniques available for creating a pleasing end product through the use of good design and landscape works. Practical issues such as long term maintenance and establishment of vegetation were considered. The end result was a practical guidance document for use by geotechnical engineers in the design of slopes and retaining walls in rural, semi urban and urban environments
